“Invisible” payments being tested in Spain

Spanish banking company BBVA is testing a facial recognition system in its internal cafeterias as part of an effort to make payments “invisible”. The system is able to recognize user faces as well as their orders and then charge the appropriate fees to the users’ accounts. The application also allows users to share their account with visitors and includes a loyalty program and discounts. So far, more than 1,000 employees have downloaded the experimental application and are participating in the testing.

The biometric face recognition system is based on Veridas technology and has been developed in collaboration with partner-restaurant Sodexo Iberia. The next stage of development is to attempt to implement such a service at regular self-service restaurants.
