Sberbank joins IoT consortium

Sberbank has joined the Competence Center consortium, which is focused on wireless communications and the internet of things (IoT). The purpose of the Competence Center is to:

  • Initiate IoT research
  • Implement new scientific developments in business
  • Facilitate the production of products and services
  • Develop industry standards and educational programs

The Competence Center currently has a research budget of RUB 90 million; however, that amount is expected to reach RUB 200 million by 2022.

For Sberbank, IoT is of great interest, particularly in technologies that lead to smart buildings, smart stores, smart cities and eHealth. The bank has also expressed interest in ‘bank of things’ concepts and has already implemented telemetry data collection and remote control projects at several of its branches.

The Competence Center consortium includes, among others: Sberbank, the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), Atomstroyexport, Gazpromneft, Russian Space Systems, Phillips and a number of leading universities and research centers.
