Russia’s Big Data Association to create Big Data sandbox

The Big Data Association has announced its intention to create a sandbox for working with the anonymized personal data of association customers, including data on purchases, payment types and mobile-related data. The Big Data Association hopes that the sandbox will allow association members to better design products and services. There is, however, some concern that a data leak from this sandbox could result in attackers being able to create a portrait that eventually leads to specific people. Currently, the traffic of anonymized data is outside state regulation. To organize legal support for working with the platform, representatives of the Big Data Association are working with specialists from the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Communications.

The Big Data Association includes, among others, Sberbank, Qiwi, Tinkoff Bank, Rostelecom and Megafon. It also has plans to ask Roskomnadzor to join the project.
