Sergey Gimadiev, the deputy chairman of Kapitalbank and head of the digital branch of Apelsin, recently sat down to discuss how the events of 2020 will shape how financial institutions operate in 2021. In short, Mr. Gimadiev believes that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be underestimated as they have pushed the development of remote and digitized banking beyond where it would otherwise have been. He expects this to continue in 2021 and beyond as financial institutions and consumers have come to understand the benefits of digitization. This, in turn, will likely improve the overall quality of customer service in the financial sphere. He also foresees the continued development of financial institutions in online and smartphone-based marketplaces, including those that are completely operated by financial institutions themselves. He notes the success of Russia’s Sberbank and Tinkoff in this regard and expects that financial institutions will continue to find new and interesting outlets for reaching and doing business with consumers.
