Cashless payments in Kazakhstan gaining in popularity

Non-cash transactions continue to increase in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan, especially in terms of monetary value. From November 2017 through November 2018, the total volume of non-cash payments in the region increased 6.2 times, reaching KZT 31.6 billion and exceeding ATM withdrawals (totaling KZT 29.6 billion) for the first time. The average sum for non-cash payments was KZT 11,971, whereas the average withdrawal amount from ATMs was KZT 47,647.

The city of Almaty still leads in terms of cashless transactions in the country, accounting for 64% of the total volume of non-cash transactions in the country. In fact, Almaty is the only city in Kazakhstan where the volume of non-cash payments by card exceeds the amount of cash withdrawals at ATMs. Online payments are the most popular form of non-cash card payments in the country, accounting for 57% of all non-cash card payments in the country.

The number of payment cards in Kazakhstan amounts to approximately 22.7 million, an increase of 17.9%. The number of POS terminals is 133,500, an increase of 6.7%.
